A client commissioned me to build this small and elegant streamer based on an RPI3 along with a HiFiBerry Digi+ Pro and a high quality linear power supply.
One disadvantage of the RPI is that it does not have a native 44.1 clock speed. Along come our friends at HiFi Berry with the Digi+ Pro which has two precision on board clocks. Add a decent linear power supply connected directly to the Gigi+ Pro board and you have a very decent music server for not much money.
For the technically minded, it’s very easy to connect this set up to the right Dac via i2s to get sound quality to match the best.
Really happy to give new life to this great looking radio. Chromecast streamer and Class D amplification have rejuvenated this and it’s now n daily use in the customer’s master bedroom! The speaker was replaced too as the original had a powered electromagnet.
Class D amp, LEDs and Chromecast streamer installed along with power supplies. It sounds pretty decent through the original speaker too!
Having reviewed the costs of restoration and options with the owner we are going to:
- Turn two into streamers using Google Chromecast Streamers and Class D amplification. Two of the controls will be used for on/off and volume and the tuning dial will be backlit by LEDs.
- The third, the Bush VHF, will be fully restored and a Chromecast model built in and connected to the Aux input.
All three will use the original speakers, in the case of the Bush that’s two 6ins bass /mid units and an electrostatic tweeter.
